Dr Kieran McCartan

Researcher and educator on the prevention, reality and impact of sexual harm; focusing on the management and reintegration of perpetrators


Dr McCartan is an Associate Professor in Criminology at UWE, an Adjunct Associate Professor in Criminology at Queensland University of Technology and a Visiting Research fellow at the University of Huddersfield. Kieran is currently the also the leader of the Social Science Research Group (2013 – ongoing) and joint coordinator of the Sexual Violence Research Network (2014 – ongoing) at UWE.

Dr McCartan has a track record of researching, publishing and presenting on the sex offender register, sex offender disclosure, Public Health Approaches to preventing sexual abuse, sex offender reintegration and management as well as the related public/practitioner/policy debates on these issues. He has extensive experience of working in the UK and internationally (Ireland; Netherlands; Latvia; USA; Canada; Australia); has received funding from research councils (incl, ESRC; Leverhulme), government (incl, Ministry of Justice, Cabinet Office, Bristol City Council) and charities (incl., ANROWS, Circles UK); published widely in academic and professional arenas; and taken part in extensive media interviews.

He is the international Member of the ATSA executive board; lead blogger on the SAJRT and the NOTA Prevention Blogs; a member of the ATSA Prevention committee, the NOTA Research committee and the NOTA Prevention committee; a Trustee of Circles South West; a grants reviewer for ESRC and NSVRC; and the only international expert research advisor to Bravehearts (Australia).

Dr McCartan has a over 40 academic publications (incl., Journal Articles, Books, Book Chapters & External Research Reports); 25+ practitioner/professional articles; 65+ blogs & online publications; generated over 1/2 million pounds in external research funding; has given 100+ external presentations nationally and internationally (incl., Conference Papers & invited Keynotes); & taken part in over 25 media interviews (incl., ABC Lateline, Australia; Points West, BBC England; Nolan Live, BBC Northern Ireland; BBC International; TV Live Asia).
